We hear the word organic a lot lately, sometimes so often that it becomes a little meaningless. Frequently the word organic is used alongside words that don’t even have a non-organic option, or that can’t actually be organic by definition.

With all the marketing using it as a buzzword, it can be easy to lose sight of how real, truly organic products can be beneficial for ourselves, and the world around us.

Here are 4 honest ways that organic beauty products can benefit you, and the world.

1.Hormone Disrupting Chemicals

Organic beauty products are known for avoiding parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. These ingredients used to be in almost all beauty products, but more recently have been shown as potentially dangerous.

Multiple studies have found that such ingredients may be disruptive to human hormonal systems, which could lead to a number of health problems including possible reproductive issues.

2. Aluminum Compounds

A 2005 study found that repeated application of aluminum compounds, such as those in many antiperspirants, could lead to an increase in breast cancer cells. This is because the compounds have the ability to mimic estrogen in humans.

There is also a long-ranging debate that has been raging since 1965 about whether aluminum may or may not contribute to Alzheimer’s.

3. Mineral Oil

While the WHO has classified mineral oil as a class 3 carcinogen, meaning there isn’t enough evidence to classify it as safe or unsafe, a 2011 study found mineral oil to be the largest contaminant present in human bodies.

Mineral oils are sourced from petroleum, which is a well-known environmental hazard but can easily be replaced using other oils such as chamomile, argan, or grape seed.

4. Non-plastic Compost

One of the greatest benefits of organic beauty products is that they’re significantly more likely to come in compostable packaging. This isn’t a benefit that directly helps you or your body right now, but it helps the whole planet in the long term.

Replacing the disposable packaging that so many of our daily products come in can have a huge impact. It’s an easy step we can all take to reduce the amount of plastic we throw out every day.
